Council heads new plan to remove ‘red tape’ impeding cheaper housing

LOGAN City Council plans on removing red tape to make building “more affordable” terrace housing easier.

Currently, building a terrace house requires two separate applications to council – a material change of use and a reconfiguring a lot application.

But under a proposed new city planning scheme, those requirements would be removed to make the process faster and building easier.

According to the local council, there is “increasing demand” for ‘gentle density’ housing like terrace homes, which must be two-storeys or taller, touch one or more neighbouring dwellings, and sit on 300sqm or smaller blocks.

Mayor Jon Raven said focusing on housing like this would give locals the “chance to own their own home in a great location”.

“… without the price tag, the body corporate fees or the upkeep of a big block,” he said.

“Whether you’re a first home buyer, a downsizer or someone who wants to live closer to public transport, terrace homes tick all the boxes.”

“Supporting affordable types of housing just makes sense during a housing crisis.

“By building these homes near existing infrastructure it keeps costs down for residents and for Council, while still delivering the quality and convenience people expect in the City of Logan.”

The draft planning scheme will, if approved, make other changes to determine how land is used and developed in the city over the next 10 to 20 years.

Council says it will guide “what can be built where”, whether it is housing, businesses, parks or industrial estates.

Residents have until 31 October to have their say via logan.qld.gov.au/LoganPlan.
