Comedy crusaders smash stereotypes in Logan

Two comics are travelling Australia on a mission to “break the myth that women aren’t funny”.

And Logan is the next city on their list.

After years of performing at women’s luncheons and fundraisers to small crowds that “fangirled” them “like crazy”, Mandy Nolan and Ellen Briggs sought out a larger audience.

“I’ve been a stand-up comedian for quite a long time – probably 30-plus years,” Ms Nolan said.

“It can be quite a solitary career, flying to venues and going on long drives on your own.

“Ellen and I worked together over the years, and we talked about what it might mean to put a show together, and it went from there.”

A decade later, the duo has performed to sold-out venues across the country.

Ms Nolan promised audience members they would laugh “every 10 to 15 seconds”.

“We have a laugh talking about everyday life experiences, and most times we have people leave feeling really good about themselves,” she said.

“But you will get a workout, that’s for sure”.

Ms Nolan said the show was about housework, chickens, love, feminism, small dogs, big butts, disappointment, resentment, sex when you’re drunk, fit bits, yoga farts and “being a menopausal woman dealing with teenage angst”.

She said the days of “women aren’t funny” are over.

“Now there’s a real hunger for comedy from a woman’s perspective,” she said.

“And that’s not to say that men’s comedy is not funny, it just means that we know women are funny, and that’s really important.

“Without being modest, if you asked any of our male colleagues, they would say we’re the funniest comics on the circuit, regardless of gender.”

The duo is performing Women Like Us at Logan Entertainment Centre on Friday 26 April.

Tickets can be purchased at womenlikeus.com.au.
