One of the most satisfying aspects of my job is welcoming new ‘Aussies’ from other countries into our amazing and culturally diverse city.
On Friday, 114 people from 39 countries will take the Australian citizenship pledge at Beenleigh Events Centre.
They’re from all over the world – India, Iraq, Afghanistan and New Zealand to name just a few – varying in ages from just 3-years-old to 70 years young.
The City of Logan’s latest Aussies are welcomed where they can feel supported and where opportunities abound.
We are on the cusp of unprecedented growth and are forever evolving as a city and a community.
This creates exciting opportunities for our residents, new and existing.
The City of Logan is one of the most culturally diverse regions in Australia. It is an accolade we wear proudly. A badge of honour.
More than 217 different cultural backgrounds, speaking more than 50 languages, make up our multicultural tapestry.
This week around the country there will be more than 140 ceremonies with around 7,000 people invited to become new Australian citizens.
Friday marks the 20th anniversary of Australian Citizenship Day.
This citizenship is a shared identity – a common bond which unites all Australians while respecting our diversity.
Australia, like the City of Logan, is a welcoming place.
It celebrates our shared values of freedom, equality, democracy and commitment to the rule of law.
It’s an opportunity for all Australians, whether by birth or choice, to pause and reflect on their role in the community and how they can contribute to a cohesive and welcoming country.
I get a real kick out of being involved in the citizenship ceremony.
There is pride beaming from all of the new citizens and their families. It’s a big moment for them.
What unites us as Australians, rather than what divides us, is the cause for celebration.
And in the great words of singer-songwriter Allan Johnston: It’s been a long time comin’, to silence all that drummin’, to show them that it wasn’t just a dream.
C’mon Aussie, c’mon, c’mon.
