Caring for our great green canopy

While our community continues to take stock and assess the full impact of the Christmas Day storms, it’s important that we remember to count the cost of such damaging weather events on our rich natural environment too.

Since the storms, more than 9000 customers have disposed of storm-related green waste at one of Council’s waste facilities – reflecting the toll on our renowned green canopy.

Many species of native animals and plants call some of the worst affected areas of our city home.

As we start to look towards the future, residents from across Logan have a chance to take action to restore and rehabilitate the ecosystems in their own backyards.

Applications are now open for Council’s 2024 EnviroGrants program, which supports a wide range of environmentally focused projects each year.

Funding categories include on-the-ground ecosystem restoration, environmental partnerships and capacity building, surveys and research, educational projects, and individual wildlife carer support.

Our community cares deeply for our native plants and wildlife and our EnviroGrants program enables Council and the community to work hand-in-hand to protect and rehabilitate our native ecosystems.

In 2023, 14 City of Logan landholders received grants towards on-ground ecosystem restoration projects, including eradicating or controlling invasive weeds, revegetating waterways to control erosion and improve water quality, and improving habitats for threatened species.

Those landholders included a group of three City of Logan households who banded together to help restore a local creek that ran through their adjacent properties with the support of EnviroGrants funding.

Among other recipients, last year EnviroGrants were also awarded to three schools to support environmental education projects and fifteen individual wildlife carers to fund their ongoing work caring for and rehabilitating our native wildlife.

It’s important that we all work together to protect and rehabilitate our city’s natural environment, and I encourage all residents with eligible projects to consider applying for an EnviroGrant.

Applications will close Wednesday, March 13, 2024.
