Beenleigh Cobras tracking down old players ahead of 40 year reunion

In 1985, the senior division of the Beenleigh Cobras, renamed the Logan City Cobras in 1990, beat their rivals Jindalee to claim the AFL premiership game and reign as season champions.

That was 40 years ago.

Allan ‘Skipper’ Allard, who played defense in the back pocket of the field, has contacted just over a third of the 1985 season’s core team through regular meetings held in the past few months.

He wants to contact the other two-thirds of the team to reconnect and celebrate the 40-year anniversary approaching on 25 October.

“We’ve lost a few good mates along the way to health issues, and now that it’s been 40 years, we thought we should give it a go and see what happens,” Mr Allard said.

“We’ve been talking about it for a while.”

Anyone who played for the club, regardless of the era, is welcome to come along, too, Mr Allard said.

At 6pm on 25 October, Mr Allard said the club members would meet at the Dauth Park club rooms in Beenleigh, where they would reminisce and catch up on life’s happenings.

“Most of the former players I know of are basically all still local, some have moved up to the Sunshine Coast, and there are some in Ipswich,” Mr Allard said.

“One of our very good players lives down in Victoria now because some of them, quite a few of the boys actually came up from Victoria and moved up here to live.”

In the 1985 premiership, two Cobras teams, the senior division (of which Mr Allard was a part) and the reserve division, both made it to their grand final games, which made the season particularly memorable for the club.

The reserve team narrowly missed out on a win in the grand final game against Redcliffe. The senior team secured a comfortable win to be crowned season champions. In the 18-round season, the senior Cobra team only lost four games, Mr Allard said.

To RSVP for the 40-year reunion, former Cobras members should contact Mr Allard on 0438936878 or Greg Kreiger on 0417907430.
