War against mozzies continues

Council workers are continuing a post-flood mozzie blitz, spraying more than 760 fresh and saltwater sites across Logan.

Bureau of Meteorology experts are predicting more rain, which means things won’t be getting any better. Each of those sites will have to be revisited in coming weeks.

A council statement said there were also other “suspected mosquito breeding areas”.

Drone and all-terrain vehicles are being used to treat difficult-to-access areas, while mapping has also been done to monitor the changing levels of adult mosquito populations, the statement said.

Residents are also being asked to help take up the fight against mozzies – to tip out water in wheelbarrows, garden pot saucers and tarpaulins.

City lifestyle chair Cr Laurie Koranski said floods had left “a lot of stagnant water around and 90% of treatment sites have been freshwater”.

“The treatment will continue until these areas return to normal,” she said.

Council also provides up to six free native fish for residents with dams or ponds. The fish eat mosquito larvae.
