Quick Tae Kwon Do moves prevent damage

A quick thinking martial arts crew has saved the Bethania Community Centre from extensive flooding damage.

The Tae Kwon Do group used towels and mops to divert the flow from a burst pipe for 40 minutes, which gave centre management enough time to identity the problem and turn off the water system.

A tap started leaking in a disabled toilet on the night of January 20.

If not for the fast response of the team from Australian Defensive Tactics Logan, the centre could have suffered expensive and lengthy repairs.

“The hot water pipe burst, which was after hours for our office,” centre staff member Lee McKenzie McKinnon said.

“It was all hands on deck to grab mops and use newspapers to block hallways and all sorts of things to get it to stop,” he said.

“They were going for at least 40 minutes.

“All of us were away doing other things, so they eventually got a hold of us, we ducked down here and we came up with a plan.”

Making matters worse was that the mains would not turn off, so it took a while to trace the leak back to the disabled toilet.

“It was very lucky,” Mr McKenzie McKinnon said.

“It would have flooded the entire place and gotten into the walls and carpet.”
