Despite numbers being at their lowest in 18 months, more than a quarter of items put into yellow lid bins are not able to be recycled.
The latest contamination rate was 28.3% which deputy mayor Jon Raven said showed there was more work to be done.
“Reducing the amount of rubbish that gets buried as landfill is everyone’s job,” Cr Raven said.
“Our recycling and green waste bins are helping to do that and we will continue to work with residents to explore new ways to reduce what goes into our landfill bins every week.”
Last week, children from Park Ridge Childcare and Preschool were quick learners, embracing the benefits of recycling.
They hosted a visit from one of the city’s new blue trucks responsible for the disposal of rubbish.
And as part of the visit, they helped sort and bin recyclable materials before watching it disappear into the back of the truck.
Crs Raven and Jacob Heremaia joined the visit which they said marked significant milestones during National Recycling Week.
There are now nearly 120,000 premises across the City of Logan with yellow-lid recycling bins.
In 2020/21, this resulted in a record 13,225 tonnes of recyclable material being diverted from landfill.
There were also 543 requests for green bins in October, raising the total number to 11,513.
More than 1000 tonnes of green waste has been turned into compost since July 1 under the green bin scheme.
Cr Heremaia said it was important that everyone understands the benefits of recycling, irrespective of their age.
“Good recycling habits can be practised your entire life and can help the environment for generations to come,” he said.
