A 2km stretch of the old Logan Village to Bethania rail line is well on its way to becoming a new recreation track, with council sending the proposal to the delivery stages.
Logan City Council recommended the idea be elevated to the implementation phase with the Queensland government.
The proposal is part of a long-held vision to transform disused rail line in Logan into recreation tracks.
Council tabled the decision in committee meetings on the third week of October.
Council is pushing for an 80-20 funding split with the Queensland government. It would see the state supply most of the funding on the grounds that the project offers important heritage value to the area.
In July, Cr Laurie Koranski notified residents of two separate seniors’ living resorts on either side of the trail about the proposal.
The proposal would see the site, positioned between the Palm Lake villages, converted into 2km of recreation track for walkers, runners, and bike and horse riders.
Most of the Palm Lake Bethania is not fenced off to the rail trail. The resort’s resident group said in July they are already targets for break-ins and graffiti because of the easy access and are worried about crime becoming a bigger issue if the proposal goes ahead.
Logan City Council met with the resident group and Burchills Engineering Solutions – the company in charge of conducting the feasibility study.
Discussed in the meeting was the possibility of security measures, such as fencing to protect the resorts.
