Green waste ready for 2021

From July next year, City of Logan residents will have three bins – general waste, recycling and green waste.

That is, if they want to. The new green waste service is optional and comes at a cost – $46 a year for a 140-litre bin, $51 a year for a 240-litre bin and $76 a year for a 360-litre bin.

Everyone can have up to two green bins.

The green bins, to be known as the lime-top bins, are for prunings, palm fronds, weeds, leaves and grass clippings which will be recycled into compost.

They are not for soil and rocks.

Mayor Darren Power said the new service was geared to help people without a ute or trailer.

Pick up is fortnightly, and anyone who opts in is up for a minimum 12-month trial.

Deputy Mayor Jon Raven says the time to opt in is now, so council is able to order enough bins and to organise enough collection trucks.

“We expect many of our green-thumbed residents to register their interest in this exciting new service,” Cr Raven said.

“Council will contact those interested residents in the New Year to organise registration and bin delivery.”

Green waste bins will be collected on alternate weeks to yellow recycling bins.

The introduction of new green waste bins will have no impact on existing waste and recycling collections.
