$5000 boost to help Logan students chase university dreams

Big university ambitions can come with a hefty price tag, but Logan school-leavers facing financial hardship can apply for $5000 to help turn their dreams into degrees.

From textbooks to everyday study expenses, the City of Logan Tertiary Education Bursaries aim to ease the financial pressure on students preparing to take their next step after Year 12.

Logan mayor Jon Raven said the bursaries could make a difference for students worried about affording university.

“University can open doors, but we know the cost can be a challenge for some people,” Cr Raven said.

“These bursaries give Logan students a helping hand and make sure our talented young people have the opportunity to reach their potential.”

Successful applicants will receive $5000 spread across three years, with payments made in semester or trimester instalments.

Among those already benefiting from the program is Mina Sharifi, who is studying a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and Bachelor of Arts at the University of Queensland.

Ms Sharifi, who is majoring in economics and political science alongside her law degree, said the bursary helped cover textbooks and other study costs.

But the opportunity has also helped her form friendships with students pursuing similar ambitions.

“I have also met some of the most wonderful students through this opportunity who share similar academic interests as me, and it is always a pleasure to catch up with them at university,” she said.

Ms Sharifi hopes to pursue a career in international criminal law after graduating.

The bursaries are available to Logan residents completing Year 12 who intend to begin full-time undergraduate study in 2027 and need financial assistance.

Applicants will be assessed on their academic ability, educational achievements, motivation, financial hardship and personal circumstances.

The program is funded by Logan City Council and community sponsors, with applications scheduled to close on Tuesday 29 December.

Students can find eligibility information and application details through the Logan City Council website or call 07 3412 3412.
