Artisan coffee shop becoming a Logan landmark

Ten years after opening in an industrial pocket of Slacks Creek, Extraction Artisan Coffee has earned recognition as one of Queensland’s best tourist spots, shortlisted for the Queensland Tourism Awards.

Hidden away in an industrial warehouse along the Pacific Highway, Extraction has been making waves in the local coffee scene, consistently picking up awards for its quality brew.

Heather Scott, co-owner of Extraction, says the team is thrilled to be a finalist in the Queensland Tourism awards.

“We’re absolutely thrilled. To be recognised at a state level alongside some of Queensland’s best tourism operators is incredibly exciting, particularly for an independent café in Logan,” Ms Scott says.

“It’s also an opportunity to shine a spotlight on Logan and show that amazing things are happening in our city.”

She says Extraction’s unique selling point is its hospitality.

“We’ve always believed that you shouldn’t have to travel into Brisbane or to a traditional tourist destination to experience something exceptional,” she says.

“We’ve become a destination because people know they’ll experience something different when they visit.

“We’re particularly proud to be helping put Logan on the map for all the right reasons.”

Ms Scott looks back on how Extraction Coffee grew, saying they did not fully understand what they were signing up for.

“We’ve experienced incredible highs, some really challenging lows, and just about everything in between,” she says.

We’ve navigated a pandemic, rising costs, staffing challenges and an industry that has changed enormously over the past decade.

“Reaching 10 years is something we’re incredibly proud of. But, more than anything, it’s about the people.”

“One of the things we’re most proud of at Extraction is the talented people who’ve been part of our journey,” Ms Scott says.

She said Extraction’s Head of Coffee and Queensland Barista Championships champion, Liam Pratt moved to Melbourne earlier in the year.

“Liam made a wonderful contribution to our coffee program and, while it’s always sad to see great people move on, we also see it as a success when our team members grow and pursue new opportunities,” Ms Scott says

Extraction has since started collaborating with Talo Coffee, an independent roastery founded by another former Extraction Head of Coffee, Sarah Jin, while the new Head Barista, Boyun, continues to train and uphold the same high standards.

“We’ve also always loved the opportunity to collaborate with people who share our passion for great coffee,” Ms Scott says.

“Sarah Jin, who was our roaster prior to Liam, is currently looking after our coffee program and continuing to roast in our style, one that we know customers enjoy.”

Extraction Artisan Coffee is still trying to push boundaries and develop its team, while keeping the personal connection with the local community.

“Our goal isn’t necessarily to become bigger. It’s to keep getting better,” Ms Scott says.

“If we can continue surprising people, making their day a little brighter and giving them another reason to visit Logan, then I think we’re doing something right.”
