The Shailer Park Scout Den has reached a significant milestone in September, as Joey Scout Eloise Al Lawati received the den’s first Joey Scout Challenge Award since its reopening after COVID in July 2023.
The Joey Scout Challenge Award, otherwise known as the Joey Peak Award, is the highest award a Joey Scout can achieve.
It recognises a young person who has pushed themselves outside their comfort zone, picked up new skills, taken part in adventures and given back to their Joey Scout section and community.
Eloise, 8, is moving up to the cubs scout section of the den. She had to demonstrate a variety of scouting skills and complete a series of new experiences, while supporting her fellow Scouts and develop both personally and in her community.
Highlights of her journey in completing the challenge include an Adventurous Journey along the Witches Falls track at Mount Tamborine in June, a 4.2-kilometre, Grade 4 hike in which she led a small group of Joeys, Scouts and leaders to hike through the track.
She also helped lead a project to gather donations for Bright Bags Queensland, demonstrating volunteer spirit and giving back to the community.
Shailer Park den leader Simon Hurling said the award was incredibly special for Eloise.
“Seeing Eloise achieve her Joey Scout Challenge Award is incredibly special. It’s a huge
achievement for a Joey, and it’s something she can be really proud of.”
“She has challenged herself, tried new things, learnt new skills and grown so much along the way.”
“Eloise’s achievement is even more significant for our group because she is the first
Joey at Shailer Park Scout Den to achieve the Challenge Award since we reopened after
COVID.”
Joeys Leader and Eloise’s mother Megan Al Lawati said she was grateful for Eloise’s fellow Joeys for supporting her.
“Eloise has shown that age is no barrier to achieving big things. She has demonstrated
determination, curiosity, kindness and a willingness to give things a go, which is exactly
what we want to encourage in our Joey Scouts.”
“Eloise might be the one receiving the award, but this has been a real team effort. Her
fellow Joeys have encouraged her, supported her and celebrated every step along the
way.”
