Motorists can expect increased police patrols, breath testing and speed enforcement during the spring school holidays as a three-week statewide road-safety operation begins.
Operation Yankee Spring Break will run from Saturday 19 September to Friday 9 October, involving highway patrol, local road-policing and general duties officers across Queensland.
Police said both high-visibility and covert patrols would target speeding, drink and drug driving, fatigue and other dangerous behaviour as holiday traffic increases.
Assistant Commissioner Rhys Wildman said heavier traffic brought an increased risk of serious crashes.
“Whether it’s speeding, driving while tired, or getting behind the wheel after drinking alcohol or taking drugs, one poor decision can have devastating consequences,” he said.
“Every driver has a choice, and every choice has a very real consequence.”
Queensland Police said 219 people had died on the state’s roads this year.
Since Operation Interpose began in April, officers statewide have issued more than 125,900 traffic infringements, conducted more than 1.1 million roadside breath tests and detected 7475 alleged drink drivers.
