Chrome flashed in the sunshine as two Mustangs, a Rover, an early Holden and a 1962 Chrysler Imperial filled a courtyard at Seasons Waterford West.
Members traded jokes beside open bonnets, sausage-sizzle smoke drew residents and the rivalry between British and American cars was in full swing.
Earlier this month, residents Myles Allan and Carol Strachan helped bring the South-West Brisbane Motoring Club to Seasons for its first car show.
“We just thought it’d be a good idea to show the residents here old classic cars,” Myles said.
The red 1971 Mustang convertible was imported from Wisconsin and restored from the ground up.
Myles said the restoration meant taking “everything out — motor, gearbox … every door, all the guards, bonnet and boot” before rebuilding it.
The car also carried a story beyond just the panels and horsepower.
Diagnosed with Guillain–Barré syndrome in 2021, Myles spent six months in intensive care and was told he would never walk or drive again.
He remained with the club as a passenger. After moving to Seasons, he met Carol, recovered and drove again.
“Driving along the highway with Carol is the best feeling in the world,” he told Seasons earlier this year.
The club heads out twice most months, seeking back roads and unfamiliar places.
“It’s basically all about the journey,” Myles said.
For Carol, the club was “all about fellowship”.
“You can feel the love,” she said.
“You have good fun in the car club, everyone’s cheeky.
“It’s just good fun.”
The club is approaching its 20th anniversary.
Residents thanked Seasons staff for hosting the show and working from about 7am to prepare for the day.
For Myles, the journey led from intensive care, through the passenger seat and back behind the wheel beside Carol.
