There has been plenty happening across the Macalister electorate in recent weeks, from major infrastructure projects and local development proposals to funding support for community organisations.
Faster rail
One of the most significant projects currently underway is the Gold Coast Faster Rail Project, which is expected to increase rail capacity and improve travel times between Brisbane, Logan and the Gold Coast.
For residents in parts of Beenleigh, the proposed changes around Chapman Drive and Spanns Road will have a direct impact on how people move through the area.
The project includes the closure of the Spanns Road rail crossing and the construction of a signalised intersection at Chapman Drive and Boundary Street.
There are a number of community drop-in sessions, and community consultation on the proposal is due to close in September.
I encourage residents to drop in to the sessions, review the information and provide feedback if they would like their views considered as part of the process.
Community grants
I was also pleased to see a number of local organisations received support through Round 126 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund.
Funding was awarded to Eagleby Community Association for the purchase of equipment, while both the Logan MAD Association and the Edens Landing State School Parents and Citizens Association secured grants for facility upgrades.
These projects will help local groups continue delivering services and activities that support our community.
Shops expansion
In another update, there are proposed plans for an expansion of a local shopping centre.
This includes a second full-line supermarket with click-and-collect facilities, additional specialty retailers, two drive-through food outlets, a tyre and automotive operator, 475
additional car parks, a new signalised intersection on Logan River Road and a rear ring road connecting Logan River Road and Gardiner Road.
This proposed expansion includes North Queensland Cowboys’ plan for a leagues club in Holmview. Publicly released details indicate the proposal could include up to 100 gaming machines as part of the club’s expansion into south-east Queensland.
The proposal remains in the early stages and will need to progress through the relevant planning, licensing and approval processes.
Residents who wish to have their say should ensure they participate in consultation opportunities before they close in September.
