For many Australians, the economy simply hasn’t felt like it’s been working for them.
People have worked hard, played by the rules, and still found it harder to get ahead.
That’s been building for decades.
For Whether it’s the weekly grocery bill, paying the mortgage, finding a rental, or keeping a small business afloat, I know many people are still doing it tough.
Governments have a responsibility to make practical decisions that make life a little easier.
And we’re tackling the big challenges that have been put off for too long.
The first of July marked an important step in that direction.
Every Australian taxpayer received another tax cut.
Around three million minimum wage and award workers received a pay rise.
Paid parental leave was extended to six months, giving families more time together during those precious early months.
Urgent Care Clinics have also been made permanent, helping more Australians see a doctor or nurse for urgent, non-life-threatening care without paying out of pocket- while taking pressure off our emergency departments.
Ten new medicines have also been added to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, making important treatments more affordable.
We’ve also passed new laws to give first home buyers a fair go. Because if you work hard and save, you should be able to buy a home of your own.
New laws have also come into effect to ban supermarket price gouging, because Australians deserve a fair go at the checkout.
None of these changes, on their own, solve every challenge facing our country. There is still more work to do.
But progress comes from making practical decisions that improve people’s lives while continuing to tackle the bigger challenges that have been put off for too long.
That’s real change that matters to Australians.
And it’s real change we’ll keep delivering.
