A sea of colour, community and celebration is set to arrive in Logan as people gather for the Logan Pride March and Picnic on Saturday, 4 July.
This event will bring together members of the LGBT+ community, as well as allies, families and supporters for a day focused on visibility and pride.
Hosted by Assorted Grains as part of its broader work in the creation of inclusive arts and cultural experiences across Logan, the event aims to celebrate identity and strengthen community connections.
Assorted Grains president Ali Strachan said the day was expected to be inclusive and laid back while also an opportunity to enjoy live entertainment.
“It allows families to come together and just enjoy the park in Logan and have a safe space that they can gather,” Ms Strachan said.
“It should be a really fun day. There’s free glitter and free arts and crafts and free circus plays,” she said.
Assorted Grains describes its mission as building inclusive and creative spaces that support identity, wellbeing and connection through arts and community experiences.
“Art allows us to express ourselves, allows people to understand that expression and engage in that expression. Whether that’s music, or visual art, or theatre…. It’s really important for us to all have that. And creativity is part of humanity.”
Local pride events can provide a more personal and community-focused experience for attendees.
The picnic element of the event is expected to create opportunities for people to connect.
Ms Strachan hopes the event will appeal not only to members of the LGBT+ community, but also to families, friends and allies who want to show their support and celebrate Logan’s diverse community.
“It’s free and accessible, anyone can join, there’s no cost barriers or anything like that … it’s an event where young people particularly, who may not feel so welcome at home, can come along,” she said.
For those involved, this event is about more than a single day of celebration.
Ms Strachan said she hope the march and picnic would continue to build visibility and create spaces where people feel welcome and connected within their local community.
“We do have a call out at the moment and a campaign running to help us raise funds for events like these,” Ms Strachan said.
People can make a donation to Assorted Grain’s Pride in your Neighbourhood project to help support events celebrating pride.
