APPLYING for a job may seem pretty straight forward for some, but for people with disability, finding work in a traditional work environment can be tough.
Limited accessibility, and communication or physical barriers are just some of the obstacles that can make the path to employment difficult, but the end result is worth it.
Taylah and Mitchell say being employed is about much more than just a pay check.
They’ve been employed by HELP, an organisation which provides employment and assists people with disability with transitioning into the workforce.
“Having a job at HELP means I can work with friends and try different types of work,” Taylah said.
When Taylah finished school she was unsure about her career options, but soon found her stride after completing a work trial.
Mitchell also transitioned into a supported role after graduation and was connected to the organisation via his NDIS supports.
Supported employment with not-for-profit HELP Enterprises provides paid and meaningful work opportunities for people with disability so they can experience working life and everything that comes with it.
“Working at HELP has given me the support I need to reach my goals,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell is currently working at HELP’s Logan site two days a week and is aiming to get his forklift license in the near future.
Both Taylah and Mitchell are involved in a number of different jobs at HELP working alongside their support officers on tasks such as document destruction, food packaging and product fulfilment.
While the financial benefits of having a job are a real bonus, more importantly Taylah and Mitchell’s confidence has grown, they have developed positive communications skills, and are valued members of the team.
Their advice to anyone thinking about supported employment is simply, “Give it a go – there’s always someone there to lend a helping hand”.
HELP Enterprises Logan, a registered charity helping enhance the lifestyle and independence of people with disability, is hosting an open day on Thursday June 24, from 10.30am-12pm with activities such as career workshops, info sessions, job demos and more.
