Death toll spikes ahead of Safety Week after dangerous weekend on Logan roads

LOGAN’S road death toll has climbed to 15 people ahead of Queensland Road Safety Week, with three people dying in crashes over the weekend.

A father, 33, and his 4-year-old son were killed after they were allegedly hit by a passing ute while walking along Green Road, Regents Park on 17 August.

A man, 41, from Regents Park was charged with two counts of manslaughter later that day.

The day prior, a ute carrying three people rolled over on New Beith Road, Greenbank. The driver, a 31-year-old New Beith man, died at the scene.

On Monday (18 August), local authorities urged drivers across the city to “make safer choices” behind the wheel.

This week, 18-22 August, marks Queensland Road Safety Week – this year themed ‘We’re one team Queensland. Let’s drive like it’.

Mayor Jon Raven said it was a message that hits home in Logan.

“Our community knows how to rally together when it counts,” Cr Raven said.

“We’ve already lost 15 lives on our roads this year. That’s 15 too many.

“Tragically, they could have been avoided. Driver error, speed, seat belts, drugs and alcohol are often involved in fatal accidents.

“We can all do our part by making sure our mates and family are sober when they get behind the wheel.”

On 19 August, the Logan Road Policing Unit will hold a pop-up at Logan Central Plaza to answer all the local community’s road safety questions between 10am-12pm.

Attendees can receive free anti-theft screws, Safe P18 screws, and put their skills to test on the police driving simulator.

Advisors from Kidsafe Queensland will be onsite to check child car seat restraints.

Logan police are partnering with Logan City Council, and Transport and Main Roads to reduce local traffic accidents.

“We are known for our strong community spirit in Logan,” Cr Raven said.

“Let’s use that strength to keep each other safe on our roads.”
