Police launch Slacks Creek murder investigation

Police suspect a 29-year-old man, whose body was found at a Slacks Creek park this morning, was murdered.

Logan detective inspector Chris Knight fronted the media today about nine hours after the man’s body was found by a local resident on a footpath at Reserve Park.

While he said investigations were in their early stages and few details about the man’s death were known, Mr Knight said there was enough evidence for police to “treat this as a homicide”.

“There are visible injuries observed by our forensic officers that certainly allow us to treat this as a homicide, and certainly an unexplained and suspicious death,” Mr Knight said.

“We don’t know [if it was a random attack]. But it is more likely… that the 29-year-old man has met somebody here and something has occurred.

“We have a lot of questions surrounding those circumstances.

“At this stage we can’t say how long he was at this park prior to him being located.”

Police were alerted to the man’s body at about 7am on 13 August.

A crime scene was established soon afterwards and police worked to identify the man, who Mr Knight said was local to the area.

Now, police are appealing to anybody who lives in or passed by the area, including the streets surrounding Reserve Park, between 7pm and 7am.

“We have a large contingent of detectives… trying to contact local residents to make this same appeal, but if you haven’t yet been visited by police, I ask you to please come forward and volunteer any footage or any observations that you may hold that could advance this investigation,” Mr Knight said.

He said the man’s family was “devastated” by the news of his death, and two of his siblings were currently speaking with detectives.
