A group which helps fire victims has released figures which show the kitchen is the most likely place for fires to start, with 47% of fires during the last three months starting there.
Statistics collected by the Logan House Fire Support Network showed most fires happened on a Monday (63), followed by Sunday and Wednesday (62) and Saturday (58).
The days when the least number of fires occurred were Tuesday and Thursday.
Statistics showed that while the kitchen was by far the most likely source of fires, 8% started in the sleeping area, 4.9% in the lounge room, 4.7% in the laundry and bathroom, and 25.9% in other areas of the home.
Seven people were killed in fires across the state over the last three months. There were 386 fires in homes, and 100 callouts across the southeast region.
A representative of the Logan House Fire Support Network said it was a timely reminder: “Don’t stop looking while you are cooking”.
“We urge everyone to take extra care around the home,” they said.
“Check that your smoke alarms are in working order. Do not leave candles unattended. These figures are high and the death toll is way too high, please we urge you, be careful.”
