The Family Place to undergo $2.2m upgrade

A centre that provides vital support to vulnerable families with young children will undergo $2.2 million of renovations.
The Family Place, a community centre operated by The Salvation Army and located along North Road in Woodridge, will be upgraded to include a new playground, improved amenities and more space for support providers.
Currently, the centre offers a fully-fenced yard with play equipment that includes forts, swings, a sandpit and water play areas.
The indoor facilities include an air-conditioned play space with toys and books, a kitchen, and disability-accessible and parents toilets.
There are also resident chickens and support programs for local families.
These include music programs, sensory messy play sessions, art and craft social groups, school holiday activities, young parents mentoring, baby programs and more.
A spokesperson for the owner of the community centre, The Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation (VFFF), said the upgrades were exciting.
The federal government, as part of a new “thriving suburbs” program, will provide $500,000 for construction of the refurbishment and to fund extra services for local families.
“This program is designed to deliver investment in community infrastructure projects, in recognition that community facilities such as The Family Place are the backbone of connected societies,” the VFFF spokesperson said.
“We see our role as backing young people with innovative opportunities that advance their independence, social purpose and future security.”
