Mystery goat rules the hill

High on a hill was a lonely goat … lay-ee-odl-lay-ee-odl-lay-hee-hoo.

And he’s causing quite a stir in Jimboomba.

How did he get here?

Nobody seems to know.

But everyone has a theory.

Affectionately dubbed ‘Steve’ by locals, the goat has become a local legend, often spotted lounging about under the Mount Lindesay Highway bridge or roaming the old Jimboomba Motocross track.

He’s been the talk of the town since a viral Facebook post in mid-November, though rumours suggest Steve has been wandering the area since June.

Locals at the Jimboomba Tavern think he’s an escape artist.

Jimmy from Beaudesert has his own theory.

“I reckon he escaped from the goat farm just next to Yarrabilba,” he said

“It’s a fair hike for the bloke.”

Others, like Brooke Harvey from Jimboomba, are less concerned with his origins and more with his lifestyle.

“He looks pretty healthy and seems to be living a goat’s dream, to be honest,” she said.

“He has all the grass in the world to eat for himself. Which is probably why he’s so fat.”

The RSPCA Rescue Team confirmed Steve’s knack for elusiveness.

In late November, they investigated reports of a goat trapped under the bridge.

“Our Rescue Officer attended and found the goat, who appeared to be in healthy condition, uninjured, and free roaming,” said a spokesperson for RSPCA Queensland.

“The goat disappeared under the railing towards the river when our rescue officer attempted to get closer to investigate.”

Logan City Council believes Steve may have been dumped or abandoned, saying that “goats are typically herd animals”.

“Removing an animal from a roadside is not a simple undertaking, and council is still assessing the best course of action,” a spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, the Department of Transport and Main Roads, which owns the land, is also involved in discussions.

For now, Steve remains the unchallenged king of his mound, giving Jimboomba residents something to smile about this Christmas.
