Weather bureau warns of wild summer ahead

Heavy rain over the weekend has caused rising rivers and road closures across the Logan region, with the Bureau of Meteorology warning of more wild weather and extreme heat in the months ahead.

As of Tuesday morning, river levels in the area were beginning to recede after peaking Sunday night and early Monday morning.

The Macleans Bridge and Logan Village areas saw river heights fall steadily from 12.5 metres, while Waterford’s levels are still rising at 4.65 metres, though expected to stay below the minor flood levels of 5 metres.

The Albert River also peaked at 5.95 metres on Monday before beginning to drop.

Several key roads remain closed due to flooding, including Logan Reserve Road, Pimpama Street in Waterford, and Dairy Creek Road.

Police have urged motorists to exercise caution and avoid driving through floodwaters.

The Bureau’s newly released 2024 Summer Long-Range Forecast predicts a season of above-average rainfall and warmer-than-usual conditions for much of Queensland, with December likely to see the highest chance of wetter-than-normal conditions.

South-east Queensland, including Logan, will have higher rainfall from the end of December into early January, with the rest of the summer forecast to see more typical rainfall patterns.

Australia’s summer is also the peak season for severe weather events such as thunderstorms, tropical cyclones, flooding, and bushfires.

The Long-Range Forecast, which is updated weekly, provides insight into rainfall and temperature trends to help communities prepare for the season ahead.
