Everyone needs a friend, and to tackle a normally taboo topic, none moreso than at the end of their life.
Pat Roffey has formed a special bond with her personal support worker Lea Ferguson.
They’ve struck a deal, that Mrs Roffey will be at her grand-daughter’s wedding in March. Having been diagnosed with terminal illness, she’s determined to be here beyond her end-of-life expectancy.
The two have been friends at Arcare Slacks Creek for two years, and say they hit it off straight away.
Ms Ferguson says the relationship is so much more than a dedicated care service.
“We muck around, we make jokes; she is like a nana to me,” Ms Rutherford said.
Mrs Roffey remains strong, and looks very much to the future.
“Lea looks after me and I know she is there when I need her. I couldn’t do without Lea,” she said.
“She is completely reliable, we understand each other and if I want something, I know she will do it for me.”
Ms Rutherford said: “Pat is a beautiful person; she is my favourite.”
