Logan and Albert river sewage spill prompts health concerns

Authorities have warned locals not to eat seafood caught in the tidal reaches of the Logan and Albert rivers following a sewage spill earlier this month.

Sewage was detected in the Albert River near Yatala on Monday 8 April.

The sewer main was repaired on Friday 12 April.

On Friday (19 April), Gold Coast City Council said testing showed the river was now safe for recreational use, but Queensland Health has “in an abundance of caution” recommended against consuming seafood caught in both the Albert and Logan rivers.

Council said an initial investigation suggested the spill occured in mid-January this year.

“Queensland Health recommends any person who believes that they have become unwell from consuming fish they have caught to contact the GP for further advice,” a Gold Coast council statement said.

“We will continue to assess water quality and address any potential risks in consultation with Queensland Health, the Department of Environmental Science and Innovation and Safe Food Queensland.

“A detailed investigation is underway to fully understand the cause and duration of the spill.”

Council is working with landowners and businesses in the area that may have been impacted by the spill.
