Logan City rates are too high! There has been no review of the totality of the Logan City budget and it needs to be seriously overhauled.
We cannot just continue to raise rates to cover excessive spending.
Greenspace
Logan City has a lot of ‘Greenspace’, but most is vacant undeveloped land or land set aside for park and recreational use. We need to ensure we protect large parcels of ‘rural’ land against ‘out of sequence development’.
Tourism
Logan City has huge potential for Tourism! Tourism is simply visitations to the City in the form of ‘business tourism’, ‘educational tourism’, ‘sporting tourism’, ‘retail tourism’ and ‘entertainment’ to name a few. Each ‘day visit’ by someone from outside Logan brings an average of $150 per person. With the proper strategy, Logan can generate ‘visitations’ in multiple forms as described above.
Illegal dumping
When illegal dumping occurs Council sends out a ‘team’ of inspectors to try and identify the ‘dumper’, but leave the rubbish until a truck can be deployed by the tip staff – sometimes taking up to a month. This needs to be improved and rubbish removed on first inspection.
Hooning
Monitoring of problem areas and working closer with ‘law enforcement’. Police have given a Council a number of strategies to reduce hooning, but to also help in identification and capture of offenders – this includes sharing monitoring resources with police. With proper detection vehicles with multiple breaches can be seized and ‘crushed’ – Council can aid in the detection and proof of multiple offences.
What is one thing you would do differently to the current council?
Improve financial management – cut expenditure in areas that can be better provided through outsourcing and the ‘on-boarding’ of joint funded Council and private sector projects.

As Mayor I will support a full review of our rates system to identify areas where we can identify savings for ratepayers. This review will not include the removal of the early payment discount. I’ve identified opportunities in the first budget to provide cost of living relief.
Greenspace
I understand how important it is to balance the needs of the economy, community and environment so our city is a great place to live. As Mayor I will keep Council focused on protecting pristine environmental land in Logan, while restoring areas that have been degraded by farming and development over time.
Tourism
Tourism is a big economic driver and we have so many hidden gems in Logan. Changing our reputation and talking up our city is critical. By promoting what is great about our city we’ll bring more people here to enjoy what we have to offer and spend with our local businesses.
Illegal dumping
This term we initiated the Illegal Dumping Taskforce. It’s issued tens of thousands of dollars in fines but there is still more work to be done. My election commitment for deployable covert cameras can be used to target illegal dumping areas so we can catch the culprits red handed.
Hooning
Hooning is a challenge because police don’t have the resources to do consistent enforcement. The deployable covert cameras can help here as well, but I’d also like to support the positive parts of the car scene by bringing back the Logan Car Show and investigating locations for a skid pad.
What is one thing you would do differently to the current council?
I want to change Logan’s reputation, so we can bring more investment and opportunities. I also want to include the community in our decisions. To do that we need to listen and do much more community engagement. As Mayor, I will be out in the community and I will be on your side.

The rates are a problem that need careful evaluation. I would love to say they should be reduced but until I am able to look at the situation I cannot comment.
Greenspace
Greenspace is necessary and I do not make enough consideration to when approving new estates.
Tourism
This is an area which needs further consideration.
Illegal Dumping
Causes are varied but basically, we need more free dump days at the dumps.
Hooning
Hooning is brought about by a lack of assistance for young people in Logan, see next answer.
What is one thing you would do differently to the current council?
The council should buy an industrial shed called 4114 club house and bring the young people together with police and volunteers to teach skills like panel beating, mechanical work, etc..
