Thousands of students return to classroom

THOUSANDS of students, teachers and teacher aides returned for the 2021 school year with new experience under their belts.

Having been through Covid-19 and shutdowns of 2020, principals around the region say they are excited by the innovation teachers will likely bring to the table this year.

Through isolation, they’ve discovered new ways to engage students, some of which will make its way into daily classroom routines.

“A lot have taken the ‘Teams’ culture immediately into their daily face-to-face teaching. It has showed what kids are capable of when set a task to learn independently,” Canterbury College principal Dan Walker says.

Education Minister Grace Grace said it was an exciting time for students and families.

The government pointed to new schools throughout the state, either opening this week or next year, as is the case with North Maclean Primary School.

“This $73 million school in North Maclean will accommodate for the growing number of school-aged children in the Greenbank community,” Ms Grace said.

Ms Grace also encouraged parents and carers to enrol their four-year-old children in one of the approved kindergarten programs being delivered in more than 2000 early childhood education and care services across the state.

“It’s so important that our younger Queenslanders get a great start in life through our early childhood programs to prepare them for the transition to school,” she said.
