Governor’s gratitude provides a morale boost

Those who stood behind the City of Logan during one of its most challenging recent times stood in front
of the camera last week for a special recognition of the ongoing storm clean-up efforts.

We were honoured to again welcome the Governor of Queensland, Her Excellency, the Honourable Dr
Jeannette Young AC PSM to the city to meet with the men and women who’ve supported our
community since the Christmas Day storm.

While Her Excellency lamented having to return to the city for a second time in two years following a
devastating weather event, it was clear our resilience and strength had left a lasting impression.

She expressed her appreciation for everyone who had been involved over the past few weeks, including
Council employees, contractors, staff from other support agencies and community volunteers.

It was lovely to see smiles on the faces of our hardworking chainsaw crews as Her Excellency shook their
hands and thanked them for their endurance during the very hot and humid days we’ve experienced
since the storm.

Our doorknocking crews were also thanked for checking on the welfare of residents in our storm impacted neighbourhoods.

And her praise is a sentiment I share.

Many of our staff came back from their Christmas holidays early, and unfortunately some were also
personally impacted by the storm.

While it feels like a long time since Christmas Day, the clean-up continues in the southern parts of our
city.

The statistics to date are quite remarkable:
• 571 streets impacted by the storms.
• More than 450 requests from residents for assistance.
• More than 200 tonnes of storm waste taken by residents to waste transfer stations.
• 2600 people attended recovery hubs.
• Council employees walked more than 70km doing door knocks and welfare checks.
• 201 parks were impacted and assessed.

I overheard one of our employees tell Her Excellency that it felt like a never-ending task.

But while it feels never-ending, we’re certainly not stopping until the clean-up of tonnes of trees and
other vegetation is complete.

And to be personally thanked by the King’s representative in Queensland is a pretty big morale boost for
those involved
