Domestic violence charity Defenders For Hope gifted over 300 toys to local families and shelters during  a tough Christmas season.

Before Christmas, Defenders’ co-founder Tomeeka Smith said there were many struggling locals in need of help.

“There’s a lot of hard times during Christmas,” Ms Smith said.

“People need food on the table, but there’s no childcare so they can’t work, and some parents aren’t getting paid over Christmas – so it’s a hard time of the year.”

Defenders’ work over the Christmas period proved Ms Smith right.

The team gifted the community 88 Christmas hampers, 33 food hampers, 152 pension packs, and over 50 hot meals.

They also provided emergency accommodation, clothes washing and drying, and showers to local families.
