Video: Tornado cleanup in Logan continues

Recovery efforts, including military aid and a new Lifeline support number, are continuing throughout Logan following the recent tornado that devastated parts of south east Queensland.

Last Thursday the Australian Defence Force was brought in to help clear the streets – mainly in Cedar Grove, Mundoolun, Cedar Vale, Jimboomba and Greenbank – but many roads across the city remain flooded or blocked by storm debris, not to mention the thousands of properties impacted.

Below is footage of an ADF vehicle entering a flood-affected area, along with pictures of the ADF, local police and disaster-management groups working together in the clean-up:

A dedicated Lifeline Queensland phone support service has opened for impacted residents, providing struggling locals with emotional support and psychological assistance.

The state government’s own community recovery staff has increased from 85 to 400 in less than two weeks to help process person hardship assistance grants.

The Lifeline support service is 1800 116 671.

Lifeline Queensland Community Services acting statewide manager Len Phillipson said the helpline was for people across the state affected by environmental disasters.

“The aftermath of cyclones and flooding events leaves an indelible mark on individuals and causes emotional strain,” Mr These communities are incredibly resilient but as the days shift into weeks and months, we know resilience levels dip and emotional wellbeing deteriorates.

“Through this dedicated phone service, the compassionate and trained Lifeline Queensland team is ready to provide a listening ear, offer an unbiased perspective and most importantly, help callers to feel emotionally and mentally safe.

“With a legacy of more than 60 years in the community, Lifeline Queensland remains dedicated to standing by our community, helping them navigate the path to recovery and building a healthier, more resilient future.”

Emergency services have asked for non-local residents to keep away from storm and flood-affected areas if possible to allow them to clean up as efficiently and safely as possible.

People can apply for personal hardship assistance scheme grants at www.qld.gov.au/disasterhelp.

Up to date information about disaster support and recovery is available at  www.qld.gov.au/disasterhelp.

The Community Recovery Hotline 1800 173 349 is available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week for people to obtain information, support or assistance with grant applications.

Logan City Council has also created a new webpage where locals can access relevant information relating to the Christmas Day 2023 storms.
