Did you know that approximately 10,000 mattresses are discarded in our city each year?
These bulky items not only consume vast amounts of landfill space but also contribute to environmental degradation. Logan City Council has taken a major step forward in addressing this issue.
Announced as part of last year’s budget the cutting-edge recycling process, is transforming discarded mattresses into valuable resources.
By shredding these mattresses, we can recover the metal spring coiling, which amounts to nearly 8 kilograms of scrap metal per mattress.
Additionally, we are extracting the shredded fabric and foam, both of which have recycling potential.
The impact of this recycling technology cannot be overstated.
By implementing this process, we are working towards reducing the amount of landfill space needed for each discarded mattress by up to 90 percent.
This means we are not only minimising waste but also maximising our capacity to manage it effectively.
Undoubtedly, this advanced recycling technology comes at a cost.
However, when we consider the invaluable reduction in waste going to landfill, the long-term benefits far outweigh the initial expenses.
As we all know, costs associated with waste and resource recovery have been steadily increasing, while the availability of landfill space continues to diminish.
It has been a running joke that the Browns Plains tip’s end of life has been projected as 10 years away from being full for the last 25 years.
We can’t just keep digging holes and making the landfill bigger is not an option
Recycling is not just a solution; it is our responsibility as residents of Logan City.
We can all play a role in safeguarding our environment for future generations.
There are many ways you can recycle, from Council’s waste collection service through to transfer stations.
Let’s work together to reduce waste, conserve resources, and build a sustainable future for Logan City.
