Is it Springwood, or Spring-wouldn’t?

Questions are being asked why Springwood hasn’t been able to become Brisbane’s Parramatta, or equal to one of the thriving outer-suburbs of Melbourne.

A walk through the main business district of the area reveals numerous offices still vacant. The more blocks away from the newest part of the suburb, the more deserted it becomes.

LJ Hooker Commercial agent Kerry Armstrong has been in the area for 50 years, and has seen promises for years that Springwood would grow.

He says the horse may have bolted as office space becomes popular in the Loganholme area.

“The problem with Springwood is that it’s B and C grade office space. Yes, we’re leasing some of it, but it’s not generating the same interest as Loganholme,” Mr Armstrong said.

There are some positives for Springwood, with the mall planning a redevelopment in the near future which will be aimed to inject life into the centre with a dedicated dining precinct and redeveloped facade.

But it’s a long strip. Why isn’t it firing? And is there more potential at Loganholme, Beenleigh or Browns Plains?

“Parramatta is now up to 92 storeys,” Mr Armstrong said.

He said the success of Loganholme came down to the ingenuity of the developer who “has always tried to build the next development better than the last one he built”.

“They’re of a high standard. Springwood is short of car parks, it needs someone to come along with a little bit of money to get the ball rolling,” Mr Armstrong said.
