Fatality Free Friday more than a day

Friday, May 26 is Fatality Free Friday – it’s an initiative that is about so much more than a single day.

Road safety is everyone’s responsibility and together we can all create safer roads.

Our goal is to instil lasting change in driver attitudes, creating a safer road environment for all.

Already this year we have witnessed seven tragic fatalities on our city’s roads – three motorbike riders, three pedestrians, and one vehicle occupant.

These numbers are not just statistics, serious road accidents have a lasting impact on families and friends. The economic, social and emotional costs of serious road trauma are far reaching and enduring.

Together, we can prevent these devastating incidents from occurring.

Each person on the road plays a crucial role in ensuring our roads remain safe, not only on Fatality-Free Friday but every day of the year.

It is our shared responsibility to uphold this commitment.

I will be making my pledge to Road Safety at our annual SafeRoads4Logan event at Grand Plaza, Browns Plains on Thursday.

This event, organised in partnership with Council, the Department of Transport and Main Roads, Queensland Police Service, Queensland Health, and RACQ, aims to raise road safety awareness in our community.

Representatives from the organisations will be on hand to speak to members of the public, fostering conversations about road safety.

There will also be a ‘100 shoes’ display – a stark reminder of lives lost on our roads.

I am proud of Council’s involvement in this important work, as we strive to prioritise road safety throughout our community.

Safety should be at the forefront of our minds whenever we use the roads.

It is not a concern limited to Fatality-Free Friday alone; rather, it should be a year-round priority for all of us.

I urge every motorist, bike rider, and pedestrian to take the pledge to Choose Road Safety.

The Australian Road Safety Foundation encourages everyone to:

  • to always be fit to drive
  • drive in accordance with road conditions
  • stay focused on the road
  • be visible

By embracing this commitment, we can build a future where Fatality-Free Friday becomes an everyday reality, and where our loved ones return home safely from every journey.
