The future of Australia Day citizenship ceremonies in Logan remains uncertain, with council yet to decide if it will break with tradition.
The federal government late last year sent councils what it felt was a lifeline – allowing them to move ceremonies away from the public holiday in order to save money.
Under the Australian Citizenship Ceremonies Code, it was mandatory for local governments to host Australia Day ceremonies.
As per tradition, Logan City Council and the mayor will this year welcome new Australians at a ceremony for 110 people and their families.
Logan combines its Australia Day awards presentations at the same ceremony.
However, next year is not a lock.
A Council spokesperson said next year’s ceremony had not been planned, and a decision on the date had not yet been made.
“In December 2022, the Australian Government announced an update to the Australian Citizenship Ceremonies Code, giving flexibility on when councils are required to hold citizenship ceremonies,” the spokesperson said.
“Logan City Council is hosting a ceremony on Thursday, January 26 in conjunction with the 2023 City of Logan Australia Day Awards.”
In a release late last year, Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, Andrew Giles said: “It is the Australian Government’s strong expectation that councils conduct ceremonies on January 26.”
“Australia Day holds great significance to many people across Australia. Our national day provides all Australians with the opportunity to reflect, respect, and celebrate,” he said.
“The Australian government implores councils to have new citizens as their key focus, recognising that many community members want to complete their journey to Australian citizenship in connection with Australia Day.”
