Matu new year a celebration of strength

The City of Logan is one of the most culturally diverse local government areas in Queensland. Approximately 96,000 Logan residents are born overseas and almost 62,500 people speak a language other than English at home. 

People from more than 217 diverse cultures call Logan home. 

As a council we are committed to working closely with our local services and cultural leaders. This enables council to understand community needs, trends and achievements and strengthens relationships with our culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

In November last year council launched its Proud City Campaign, celebrating the city’s boldest features. At the heart of that campaign was the city’s diversity and vibrancy, unlike any other.

Our culturally diverse communities play a key role in shaping the city’s social, cultural, economic and civic life.

They dish up authentic, traditional food and sell exotic foodstuffs at local markets, not available in major city centres.

On Saturday night crowds celebrated the Matu Community of Queensland’s Cangyom Multicultural Festival.

This event showcased the cultural traditions and heritage of the Matu community – one of the ethnic groups from Myanmar.

However, they also brought together their fellow wider ethnic communities to promote unity and togetherness among these diverse communities and groups in the City of Logan. 

Cangyom is the Matu New Year that is celebrated all around the world by the Matu people. This event holds great significance not only for the Matu community, but to all our extended multicultural ethnic communities in our great city.  

The Matu community celebrates Cangyom annually, showcasing their cultural performances, and providing the chance for our multicultural communities to network with others. 

Our city’s great strength are our people and no matter our differences we all share in celebrating the traits that make the City of Logan unique.
