Recently I was privileged to be invited to open the new Headspace ABI property at Bahrs Scrub.
‘The Homestead’ is an opulent facility, nestled in a tranquil, bushland corner of the suburb with an abundance of wildlife.
The Federal Government contributed $16,500 through the Stronger Communities grant program to help with the purchase and renovation of the property to make it suitable for its new residents.
As many as seven participants can be accommodated at the property, which consists of two adjoining houses.
The homes, with dual living areas, are suitable for people with mobility issues including ramps and wheelchair accessible bathrooms and bedrooms.
Participants will be offered short to medium term accommodation with a focus on rehabilitation in conjunction with local activities.
There are also plans to build an on-site specialised rehabilitation gym and swimming pool.
The Headway ABI clients who are fortunate enough to spend any time at The Homestead will also be able to take part in a large number of activities.
On site, as well as the large and beautiful grounds to enjoy, there are also a number of outdoor entertainment areas, several large screen televisions, and a pool table.
Residents will be able to take part in a number of activities, such as stargazing with telescopes, cooking classes, arts and crafts, origami, and trivia games.
There are also plans to have chickens, outdoor movie nights under the stars, bonfires and barbecues, and gardening and horticulture sessions.
I am sure, that if it is not already, The Homestead at Bahrs Scrub will be jewel in the crown of the Headway ABI residential program.
Congratulations to everyone who has helped make this dream property a reality, and I hope that it helps people with acquired brain injuries and their loved ones.
