Everyone has the right to feel safe in their community and Council is committed to improving public safety wherever it can.
We have seen it done successfully in cities around the world. In New York City it was the regeneration of Times Square.
The then Mayor initially labelled it as a ‘terrible place to visit’. It was unsafe, over-run with crime and plagued by drug dealers.
He had a dream to transform Times Square from the rotting core of the Big Apple into a family-friendly beating heart. His vision was to not only attract families and tourists, but investment.
Over a two-year period it began to vibrantly morph with Disney the first company to invest. The next five years saw theatres, galleries, public amenity and museums pop up.
New Yorkers felt an immense sense of pride in their revitalised square and it soon became a movie location mecca.
Public perception is crucial when addressing community safety. Often our amazing City of Logan is tagged by negative perceptions and stereotypes, but that doesn’t define who we are.
Council recently adopted a new strategy and action plan aimed at creating a safer Logan.
The City of Logan: Safe City Strategy and Action Plan 2021-2025 will guide the development and delivery of community safety initiatives for the next five years.
It involves not only Council, but Queensland Police Service, community groups and the general public, all working together towards solutions to reduce crime in our city.
It may not be on the same scale of New York City, but by working together, we can create a safer and more inclusive city for the families who call Logan home.
