Kurt makes surprise visit to son’s school

Commonwealth gold medalist Kurt Thompson has made a surprise visit to his son’s school.

The Greenbank champion 3×3 wheelchair basketballer said his son had previously not told a lot of kids that his dad was in a wheelchair because he was embarrassed.

But after Sporting Wheelies hosted the Inclusive School Sports Program for Jacob’s grade, and his cohort of able-bodied students got to try their hand at para sports, he realised that his dad playing Wheelchair Basketball was cool.

Now he wants all his friends to know.

With one in five children living with disabilities, the first-of-its-kind program seeks to break down myths and misconceptions about disability and encourage all students to participate in inclusive para sports such as Goalball, Boccia, Wheelchair Rugby and Wheelchair Basketball.

The program involves four two-hour workshops and will be hosted by Sporting Wheelies’ Game Changers. Game Changers are Queenslanders living with a disability who have been employed under the $1.1 million grant from the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) to create awareness and empowerment amongst the community.
