Battling cancer tougher during Covid

Browns Plains resident Patricia Mahara is facing her own battle with breast cancer after losing her mother to the disease 20 years ago.

She’s preparing for 30 rounds of radiation therapy, but says she’s thankful to the support network around her – some of it provided from funds raised by Dry July.

“Since having to go through chemotherapy I have had a few creaks and cracks in my body from being unwell, my main goal is to get the use of my arms back so I can return to full-time work as a disability support worker,” she said.

“This has been an incredibly difficult time as going through cancer would normally be a rough journey, but to do it during Covid has been extremely scary as your immune system is so low.”

Ms Mahara has joined the Mater Cancer Care Centre’s “return to wellness program” and says classes are helping her develop more strength, and helping increase her muscle mass.

“Learning the skills I get taught in the gym give me the confidence to use a private gym once the 8-week program finishes,” she said.

Dry July raised $10 this year, with 38,000 Australians going dry to raise funds for those affected by breast cancer.

The Mater Cancer Care Centre was one of 33 beneficiaries.
