ONE of the latest developer partnerships with Logan City Council is coming to fruition, with light towers now installed at a new AFL ground at Everleigh, Greenbank.
The $11.5 million oval is part of the Mirvac development and will be one of the region’s largest new sporting precincts, with the oval taking up 5.5 hectares of a total 25ha sport and recreation development.
Four 30m high poles have been installed to light the field which is expected to be up and running early 2023.
AFL Queensland and local AFL club Park Ridge Pirates have each provided input on the design.
Mirvac residential development general manager Warwick Bible said construction of the oval was progressing well.
“At this stage we have completed all the earthworks, stormwater drainage and the installation of the light towers, which will not only serve as a landmark for the field but also allow players to train at night when the field is complete,” he said.
“This is the first AFL field for the Greenbank region and it will be competition grade, with a full-sized oval, warm up field and plans in the pipeline for a clubhouse on site.”
Mr Bible said the project was sustainable, with field irrigation coming from stormwater captured on site to reduce the demand on potable water. LED bulbs are fitted into lights.
Deputy mayor Natalie Willcocks said: “Key infrastructure, such as Everleigh AFL Oval, is needed to assist the development of Greenbank and to support the growing number of people seeking to buy and invest in the region.
“Community and sporting facilities are also beneficial to the physical and emotional wellbeing of locals, helping to foster a more active and engaged community by creating spaces where people can play, live, and connect.”
AFL Queensland Facilities and Government Manager Cobey Moore said he was looking forward to seeing participation rates increase in Greenbank and the wider Logan region.
“We know that facilities such as this are fantastic in terms of getting children involved in AFL,” he said.
“Families lead busy lives and having an AFL oval and club house within easy walking or driving distance makes it easy to train, play and compete on a regular basis.”
Free AFL lessons are at Everleigh Park each Wednesday from 4pm.
