About time health specialists can call Logan home

The narrative of the City of Logan being one of the fastest growing cities in South East Queensland is not new. However, with this growth comes the need for more health services.

Attracting medical specialists to the city has been a priority of mine for many years. For far too long Logan residents have had no other option than to travel to Brisbane or the Gold Coast.

Recently I was delighted to welcome an application from Australian Unity for a $150 million health hub development in Meadowbrook.

The proposed Meadowbrook development is a turning point and could help alleviate health service demands in the city.

It will deliver critical services to the Logan community and help meet the demands for medical and surgical services.

The first stage is proposed to include up to 90 inpatient beds, nine operating theatres, 60 specialists consulting suites, an onsite pathology laboratory and diagnostic imaging centre.

The development site opposite the Logan Hospital would be well connected to public transport services.

The location also means Meadowbrook will continue to evolve as a major health and wellbeing precinct, with recent Council streetscape upgrades also adding to the quality of the precinct.

In 2018 Council commissioned research to identify medical development and investment opportunities in the city. The research identified clear gaps in Logan’s healthcare infrastructure.

Council has been successful in attracting important health and medical investments in our city and more than 30,000 square metres of private health projects are expected to be delivered across the city in the next 12 months to three years.

Earlier this year I called on the Queensland Government to work with the private sector to ease the burden on Logan Hospital and state health services.

We have more than 100,000 residents in the City of Logan with private health insurance. These private health projects provide a golden opportunity for the Queensland Government to ease the strain on the health system by exploring partnerships with the private sector to deliver critical public health services.

Supporting our growing city with quality health services is something I am passionate about. I will continue to advocate to both the Australian and Queensland Governments to support Council’s campaign for more medical services in the city.

I welcome this development application from Australian Unity and other health investments proposed for the city. It is not only an investment in our city but the health of our residents.
